Borrowing for College – Weigh Your Options

Most families when faced with sending their child to college will likely use a little bit of both personal savings and student loans.

Should your student need to borrow, they should first consider federally-guaranteed Stafford loans. Stafford loans are the primary federal student loan and can be either subsidized (the government pays the interest while the student is in school) or unsubsidized. The college or university your student plans to attend will likely have included a line item for this loan in the financial aid award letter. The benefit of the Stafford loan is that it carries a low, fixed interest rate of 6.8%; it offers generous repayment terms and if you file your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each year, your student will continue to be eligible for these loans each year. The loan amounts vary depending on your status as an independent or dependent student.

As a parent, you want the best for your family. If you are considering borrowing money to pay for your student's education, you will want to consider a PLUS loan. A federal Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS) carries a low, fixed rate of 8.5%, offers generous repayment terms; repayment on these loans begins 60 days after the final disbursement each year.

Private loans however are not federally-guaranteed and usually carry a higher, variable rate that is tiered based on the borrower's and/or co-borrower's credit profile. Private loans are often taken out by the student with a parent co-signer.

When using federally-guaranteed loans, you will have the piece of mind in knowing that you are choosing the best options to finance that investment.

Protecting You from Credit Card Fraud

What is Fraud?

It's the fastest-growing crime in the U.S. Most people don't realize they've been victimized until months later. Fraud or identity theft happens when your personal information is taken without your permission to make withdrawals, or open accounts. This can damage your credit rating.

What can You do to Prevent Credit Card Fraud?

  • Sign your cards immediately.
  • Carry your card separately from your wallet.
  • Keep a record of your account numbers, expiration dates, address and phone number of each company.
  • Watch your card during a transaction, and get it back as quickly as possible.
  • Save receipts to compare with your billing receipts.
  • Void incorrect receipts and shred carbons.
  • Open bills promptly and review thoroughly, reporting any questionable charges promptly and in writing to your card issuer.
  • Notify card companies in advance of a change in address.
  • Do not lend your cards to anyone or leave them (or receipts) lying around.
  • Do not write your personal identification number (PIN) for cash withdrawals on your card or near it.
  • Shred anything with your account number on it prior to throwing it away.
  • If you don't receive your billing statement, notify your card issuer immediately.
  • Do not sign a blank receipt.
  • Never write your account number on a postcard or the outside of an envelope.
  • Never provide your credit card number over the phone to an unsolicited caller.
  • Request and review a copy of your credit report at least annually. Visit the Coventry Credit Union website www.coventrycu.org for more information.

Online Security Everyday, Everywhere

Your online security has always been top priority at Coventry Credit Union. We continually seek out new technology to provide state-of-the art security for all your online accounts. After much research we are pleased to announce our newest level of security Enhanced Login Security. This new security service is free, easy and most importantly, gives you extra protection from fraud and identity theft.

Enhanced Login Security identifies you as the true "owner" of your accounts. Now, not only will your password be recognized, your computer will be recognized as well. If we don't recognize your computer - say you've logged in from a public computer or one you have not used before - you will be prompted to provide information that only you will know as an additional line of defense against unauthorized access to your accounts. It is simple, set it up once and you are all set. The next time you log in, it is business as usual and the rest of your online banking experiences will remain exactly the same.

Enhanced Login Security will:

  • Defend against identity theft and fraud.
  • Provide security from any computer, wherever you are.
  • Make it easy for you with one-time sign-up.

Enhanced Login Security is just one more way Coventry Credit Union is working to protect you from fraud, everyday and everywhere.

Direct Deposit Trims Your To-Do List
Direct Deposit Trims Your To-Do List

We're a nation on the go. There's work time, fitness time, child time, spouse time, parent time, friend time and if you're lucky - some quiet time. Wouldn't it be nice to worry about one less thing? Try direct deposit at Coventry Credit Union.

With direct deposit, you authorize your employer or federal agency, like the Social Security Administration, to deposit your check directly into your Coventry Credit Union account so you can access funds without visiting the credit union. Instead of a check, you receive a paper record of the transaction. Employers, for example, provide an earnings statement on payday showing net deposit and how much was withheld for taxes, company savings plan, or any other withheld amounts.

Direct deposit isn't just for paychecks. If you're receiving other sources of income, such as Social Security, stock dividends, bonuses, or commission payments, you can easily switch them to direct deposit.

The Internal Revenue Service is also getting into the act. Direct deposit now delivers tax refunds to accounts of both electronic and non-electronic tax files.

No matter where you are coming from direct deposit takes the worry out of:

  • Stolen or misplaced checks
  • Delayed deposits
  • Losing potential dividends
  • Lost time

Taking Strides to Protect You from Check Fraud

Check washing, a growing problem in the United States, costs about $815 million dollars to credit unions, banks, and merchants every year, and continues to grow. Check washing is a procedure used by mail snatchers to erase the ink on checks allowing them to rewrite the checks to themselves, altering the amounts payable, and robbing you of your money.

How to Protect Yourself:

  • Never place your bills in an unlocked, residential mailbox with the red flag up, as this is an open invitation to mail snatchers
  • Check your credit union statement every month

And...

Stop by any Coventry Credit Union branch today and open a FREE MEMBERSHIP PLUS CHECKING ACCOUNT and receive a free uni-ball 207 gel pen, which is proven to be impervious to the most common check washing chemicals.

Member Net:
Simple, Safe & Secure

Whether you're at home, at work, or on the road, Coventry Credit Union is here for you 24 hours a day, seven days a week with our online banking program, Member Net.

We understand the sensitive nature of your financial records, and that is why we think it is important that you are confident in our security standards. We have several measures in place that work together to create a secure environment for your financial information. To help explain how our account access is secure, let's look at how it works.

Security at Your Computer

The first step in preserving your identity is to take an active role in securing your personal information. It is recommended to access your account on a personal computer where no one else may have access to it without your permission. Your PIN (Personal Identification Number) should not be selected from obvious clues like the names of your children or pets. We also discourage you from saving passwords in your computer.

Securing Data as it Travels Across "The Net"

Member Net is a very secure way to handle your online transactions. We only require that your web browser have encryption capability, which most browsers already have. This will prevent anyone from "eavesdropping" on your data as it travels between you and Coventry Credit Union. We call this type of software security protection Secure Sockets Layer or SSL.

When you log on to our website, our computers detect if your browser is enabled for encryption. Behind the scenes, in a matter of milliseconds, your computer and Coventry's randomly pick a number that will serve as the "key" during your brief session online.

As a user, you do not have to do a thing, except make sure your web browser version can participate in this process. After both computers select a random key, the information you send to us is scrambled when it crosses the Internet until it reaches our computers where it is then unscrambled for processing. This ensures that no one can identify the information without the matching keys.

Security at Coventry Credit Union

At Coventry Credit Union, we employ the latest computer technology to protect your data on all of our computers, including those used in supporting our Member Net system. Once your information reaches us via the Internet, it goes through another security computer, called a firewall. A firewall acts as a security guard for Internet traffic and ensures that your information is safe.

Hold Down Costs When Purchasing a Vehicle
Whether you're buying a new or used car, careful research and planning will help you get the right vehicle without the one option nobody wants; burdensome monthly payments.

Here are some ways to save money:

Check on Reliability
Nothing can torpedo a budget like unexpected repair costs. The annual Consumer Reports survey of mechanical problems with different models, available in the magazine's April issue each year, cites both overall ratings and specific problems. If you're a paid subscriber to the magazine or online service, go to www.consumerreports.org.

Look at Continuing Costs
Although insurance and gasoline costs are continuous, new-car depreciation - the value it loses each year - is a major factor. Edmunds.com summarizes these variables in a feature called True Cost to Own (click the Ownership tab on the home page, then True Cost to Own). A vehicle that costs less to buy now than a competitor may in fact cost more to own over a five-year period.

Negotiate Hard
Reduce your purchase price by looking for the dealer cost or "invoice price" on sites like Edmunds.com and Kelley Blue Book (kbb.com). Then aim for a selling price before any rebate of no more than 2% over the invoice price. Better yet, talk to us at Coventry Credit Union about pre-approving your auto loan before you even start to shop for a car.

Innovative Resources is Solution to Planning for College
Have you ever thought about sending your child to college? How do you choose the right school? What is the right way to pay for it? You can now come to Coventry Credit Union for answers to these questions and more. We have implemented a new, online Education Resource Center, located at coventrycu.collegepayway.com to provide you with quality, value-added products and services that help you make informed, confident decisions about college planning and investment.

The Education Resource Center offers a unique way of approaching the college process. Based on a proprietary methodology, we offer our members the necessary products and services needed to manage this sometimes overwhelming process. Added program benefits include: tools to assist in selecting and evaluating colleges; SAT diagnostic testing; searching for scholarships; detailed loan information; on-line loan applications and much more. It is an invaluable tool for our members who are preparing for higher education for themselves or their family.

Throughout the process, you will have access to dedicated Education Resource Center Client Managers, professionals available to answer questions and provide guidance and advice. The Education Resource Center also enables you to access education loan products through the government's Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP), including Stafford Loans and Parent Loans for Undergraduate Students (PLUS) as well as others.

With the Education Resource Center, you will be equipped with the information and support you need to make the right decisions about your family's education investment.
